ISO 14001:2026 Environmental Management System Certification

I. INTRODUCTION TO ISO 14001:2026 CERTIFICATION SERVICES
ISO 14001 certification

ISO 14001:2026 is the international standard for environmental management systems (EMS). Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the standard specifies requirements for organizations to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve an environmental management system. Its core purpose is to help organizations systematically manage environmental aspects, fulfil compliance obligations, enhance environmental performance and achieve their established environmental objectives.

ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and subsequently revised in 2004, 2015 and, most recently, 2026. The 2026 edition builds on the foundation of ISO 14001:2015 while providing greater clarity in response to current environmental priorities, particularly climate change, biodiversity, resource efficiency, risk management across the value chain, environmental data and measurable environmental performance. ISO emphasizes that the 2026 edition does not completely “redesign” the standard; instead, it makes the requirements clearer, easier to apply and more closely linked to practical results.

ISO 14001:2026 is applicable to all types of organizations, regardless of their size, sector or location. Manufacturing, trading, service, logistics and construction companies, healthcare and educational institutions, industrial parks and public-sector organizations can all apply the standard to control environmental impacts, improve resource use, prevent pollution and demonstrate responsibility to interested parties.

Compared with ISO 14001:2015, ISO 14001:2026 places greater emphasis on several key areas:

  • More comprehensive consideration of environmental conditions, including climate change, resources, ecosystems and biodiversity.
  • Clearer identification of the needs and expectations of interested parties concerning the environment, climate, supply chains and data transparency.
  • Management of environmental risks and opportunities in connection with the organization’s context, compliance obligations and environmental objectives.
  • Stronger control over outsourced processes, suppliers and value-chain activities associated with environmental aspects.
  • Enhanced monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation of environmental performance.
  • Integration of audit findings, environmental data and performance results into management review to support improvement decisions.

For organizations already certified to ISO 14001:2015, transitioning to ISO 14001:2026 should involve more than simply changing the standard’s designation in their documents. Organizations need to review their context, interested parties, environmental aspects, compliance obligations, risks and opportunities, environmental objectives, operational controls, monitoring data and management review activities. Based on currently available transition information, organizations certified to ISO 14001:2015 typically have approximately three years to transition to the new edition.

Benefits of implementing and obtaining ISO 14001:2026 certification
  • Better control of environmental impacts: Enables organizations to systematically identify, evaluate and control environmental aspects arising from their activities, products and services.
  • Fulfilment of environmental compliance obligations: Supports proactive control of legal requirements, customer and partner requirements, supply-chain requirements and other environmental commitments.
  • Improved resource efficiency and cost performance: Reduces material waste, saves energy, lowers waste-treatment costs and improves operational efficiency.
  • Proactive risk management: Facilitates early identification of risks arising from internal operations, climate change, suppliers, outsourced processes and the expectations of interested parties.
  • Greater credibility and competitive advantage: Independent certification provides credible evidence that can create advantages in tendering, cooperation with major partners and participation in global supply chains.
  • Support for ESG and sustainable development objectives: Establishes a foundation for managing data, responsibilities and performance evidence for ESG reporting.

GIC Vietnam provides ISO 14001:2026 environmental management system certification services for organizations seeking to demonstrate that their systems conform to the requirements of this international standard.

This service is suitable for:
  • Organizations establishing a new environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001:2026.
  • Organizations currently implementing ISO 14001:2015 and preparing to transition to ISO 14001:2026.
  • Organizations requiring certification to meet customer, tendering or export requirements.
  • Organizations seeking to improve environmental controls and environmental performance.
  • Organizations planning to integrate ISO 14001 with ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001 or ESG programmes.
II. CERTIFICATION PROCESS
Step 1
Certification application & application review

1. Certification application & application review

The organization contacts GIC Vietnam for guidance and provides the necessary information about the proposed certification scope, sites, size, field of activity, production or service-delivery processes and environmental management system (EMS). GIC Vietnam reviews the application to determine its ability to fulfil the certification requirements, the competence required of the audit team, the audit duration and other relevant conditions. On this basis, the parties agree on the certification scope, fees and contract.

Step 2
Audit planning & preparation

2. Audit planning & preparation

GIC Vietnam establishes the certification programme, appoints a competent audit team and prepares a detailed audit plan. The plan specifies the audit objectives, scope, criteria, locations, schedule and activities and is communicated to the organization so that the necessary documents, personnel and arrangements can be prepared.

Step 3
Audit process

3. Audit process

The audit is conducted in two stages:

  • Stage 1: Review of documentation, the organization’s specific circumstances, the certification scope and readiness for the Stage 2 audit.
  • Stage 2: Evaluation of the system’s implementation, conformity and effectiveness at the sites included within the certification scope. The main activities include: Opening meeting → On-site audit → Consolidation of findings → Closing meeting.
Step 4
Audit report & handling of nonconformities

4. Audit report & handling of nonconformities

The audit team prepares a report setting out its conclusions and any identified nonconformities. The organization performs root-cause analysis and proposes and implements corrective actions within the specified timeframe. GIC Vietnam reviews the evidence and confirms that the nonconformities have been appropriately addressed before submitting the file for review.

Step 5
Review & certification

5. Review & certification

Personnel responsible for the review and certification decision, who are independent of the audit team, examine the complete audit file, report and corrective-action evidence. When the file meets all applicable requirements, GIC Vietnam makes the certification decision and issues the ISO 14001:2026 certificate. The certificate remains valid for a three-year certification cycle, provided that the organization maintains conformity and completes the required surveillance audits.

Step 6
Periodic surveillance & recertification

6. Periodic surveillance & recertification

During the certification cycle, GIC Vietnam conducts periodic surveillance audits to confirm that the system continues to be maintained and remains effective. The first surveillance audit is conducted no later than 12 months from the date of the initial certification decision. Before the certificate expires, the organization undergoes a recertification audit to determine whether certification can be renewed for the next cycle.
